This document contains selection of articles published during WWII by the theoretical journal of Polish Trotskyists, pertaining to revolutionary tactics in conditions of imperialist war and fascist occupation.

Przeglad Marksistowski (Marxist Review),theunderground theoretical-political journal ofBolsheviks-Leninists(as the Polish Trotskyist organizationcalled itself),appeared inNazi-occupiedWarsawinmid-1940.It wassoonfollowed by Czerwony Sztandar (Red Banner)discussing current events.According to thelist of the namesprinted in the latterpaperat least 57 persons (eitherpseudonyms or initials)had paidby September 1941 had paidmoneyto the publishing fund. Some of the sums came from the collectionsamong the readers. Donations were notedfromWarsaw, ZagłębieDąbrowskie,Ł(probablyŁódź)andan unknown place‘B’.

After WWII broke out, the Polish Trotskyists were cut off from their internationalcontacts, and so were unaware ofthe discussions taking place in the 4thInternational. From a letter from abroad, which reached them at the start of 1940, they found out that Trotskyconsidered the defense of USSR as a duty, whilecondemningStalinistpolicy. Apart from this, they received onlythe mostgeneraland vagueinformation.This situation forced them to think independently aboutwar-timetactics.

Only half of the 8 issues ofMarxist Review survived.The Ringelblum Archive has three numbers (from 6 to 8), supplemented by number 4, kept in the National Archives inCracow. Contents of all surviving issues were published by theJewish Historical Institute. The articles below,representing original contributions to Marxist theory,arepublished inEnglish for the first time.
